The price hike comes a year after Shopify raised prices for its base subscription plan. Many have shrugged off the most recent price increase. Shopify frequently touts its third-party app ecosystem as an advantage for merchants looking to grow their business efficiently. Many of the most popular Shopify apps have also raised prices recently. It's possible that some lower-volume Plus merchants will downgrade to more basic subscription options due to cost.

A few hours before the comedian Aparna Nancherla was scheduled to perform at the Elysian Theater in Los Angeles last month, she was at home tapping. With her index and middle fingers, she was tapping the crown of her head, tapping her chin, tapping her chest and reciting affirmations. Tap, tap, tap. Tap, tap, tap. Her nerves were also why, I was told by her publicist, I could not meet Ms. Nancherla before her performance.

‘I became insane,”Edgar Allan Poe wrote in an 1848 letter, “with long intervals of horrible sanity.” Which is not a bad description of director Scott Cooper ’s “The Pale Blue Eye,” adapted from the 2003 novel by Louis Bayard and set amid the macabre, rime-frosted Hudson Valley of 1830s New York—and the then-fledgling U.S. Military Academy at West Point. On the grounds, with a river view, a cadet has been found hanging and presumed to be a suicide. After the dead boy’s heart is cut out and stolen—a telltale sign that something more grisly is afoot—the cause of death is reassessed. Called in to help solve the crime—and, more importantly, derail a scandal—is Augustus Landor ( Christian Bale ), a much-respected former “constable” in New York City whose résumé, recited by the academy’s Superintendent Thayer (Timothy Spall) for no one’s benefit but ours, is illustrious: A retired detective instrumental in bringing down the Daybreak Boys, Shirt Tails and other gangs of New York, Landor developed methods of “bloodless interrogation” and solved the murder of a young woman at Elysian Fields, the now-long-defunct recreational area in Hoboken, N.J., that served as a playground for Manhattanites. The murder would later serve as the inspiration for one of Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin stories, “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt .” But where is Poe?
Remaking the River That Remade L.A.February 1938 was a wet month in Los Angeles. Reservoirs overflowed, dams topped out and floodwaters careered down Pacoima Wash and Tujunga Wash toward the Los Angeles River. The Los Angeles River was never a storybook river of the kind that, like the Hudson or the Seine, we associate with great cities. Among the naysayers is a venerable organization called Friends of the Los Angeles River, founded by the Texas-born poet and performance artist Lewis MacAdams. “With all the problems L.A. is facing,” he said, “even if it costs $50 billion to fix the river, we should just effing do it.”The headwaters of the Los Angeles River aren’t easy to find.
